"Chavín es el nombre de un centro ceremonial pero al mismo tiempo es el de un estilo artístico-religioso y, también, el de un complejo cultural y una época de la historia andina prehispánica. Todo esto, que puede ser tomado como una unidad de tratamiento hace 25 años, cuando aún vivía Julio C. Tello, ahora supone la necesidad de un esclarecimiento: el sitio de Chavín no es una sola época, consecuentemente hay restos de diferente data y características; el estilo Chavín, si bien refleja una tradición artística fácilmente identificable, tiene variedades regionales y cambios en el tiempo; el complejo cultural y la época 'pan andina' que venían conociendo como Chavín, tiene componentes que corresponden a más de una época y más de una cultura. Con el nombre Chavín, entonces, se habla de muchas cosas, que la investigación viene esclareciendo" (página 73) |
