A diferencia de otros países de América Latina, en el Perú las Fuerzas Armadas han realizado en las últimas décadas un notable esfuerzo para dar a conocer en el espacio público su interpretación sobre el periodo de la violencia política. Este empeño incluye estudios académicos, museos propios, libros de memorias escritos por personas vinculadas al estamento militar, novelas y películas de cine, así como el recurso a la censura para bloquear iniciativas consideradas contrarias a la imagen de las Fuerzas Armadas. Cynthia Milton analiza esta producción, con especial atención a los discursos que subyacen en ella sobre la protección de los derechos humanos.
